Like so many things in life and for that matter in photography, there are trade-offs.

I believe the decision depends on the subject and what aspects of the image the artist intends to emphasize. There is no right or wrong answer regarding preference for one or the other, but there are ways that unequivocally do a better job emphasizing a given aspect or characteristic of an image.
